Montréal

Following a unifying show in Toronto that drew a loud and lively crowd, the band made their way to Montreal, where they played at Théâtre Beanfield for the first time – a heritage theatre set in a magnificent building that was constructed in 1912 and decorated in 1922.

The band stuck to their two-set format, opening the night with ‘Skindiving‘ – its first appearance as a set opener on this tour. With Tim absent, Chloe took on the track’s demanding high vocals solo, delivering a performance that showcased both her range and rising role within the band. But Chloe wasn’t the only one stepping up. Debbie also proved indispensable when Dave suffered a minor mishap, hitting his head en route to the stage. He missed several songs but returned later, bandaged yet undeterred, while Debbie held things down effortlessly in the meantime.

Seven tracks from Laid anchored the first set. In a notable shake-up, the soaring ‘Sound‘ – usually saved for the finale – was placed just four songs in, bringing an early burst of intensity. Though the real surprise came with ‘Hymn From a Village‘, performed for only the second time this year.

‘Skindiving‘ has been the band’s song of choice to open the second set, but after using it to kick off the first, they had to switch things up and instead started with ‘Knuckle Too Far‘. The standout moment came with the unexpected performance of ‘Oh My Heart’. A fan favourite from Hey Ma that until a couple of VIP sound-checks on this tour, hadn’t been played since 2019.

The first set may have lacked any Yummy tracks, but the second more than made up for it, delivering a triple hit of ‘Stay’, ‘Better With You’, and ‘Way Over Your Head’. Holding back some of their biggest hits for maximum impact, the band closed the main set with an explosive sequence of ‘Tomorrow’, ‘Sometimes’, and ‘Laid’.Beautiful Beaches‘ kicked off the encore, before the band brought the evening full circle with a powerful, emotional closer: ‘Out to Get You‘.
